The Goetia houses the sigils or "Call Signs/Symbols" of the 72 Demons/Fallen Angels that King Solomon cast in the brass vessel. The book contains a litany of evocations to call forth these fallen spirits into our plane of existence. An invocation calls a spinit inside of the magician and evocation calls the spirit outside of him or herself. This is also known as a summoning. One of the spirits is Marbas:
"In demonology, Marbas or Barbas is a demon described in the Ars Goetia. He is described as the Great President of Hell governing thirty-six legions of demons. He answers truly on hidden or secret things, causes and heals diseases, gives wisdom and knowledge in mechanical arts, and can change men into other shapes. He is depicted as a great lion that, under the conjurer's request, changes shape into a man." (Source:Wikipedia)
The piece "Cast in Chains":
depicts the Magician or Summoner, calling forth Marbas and casting him in chains, forcing him to halt the spread of COVID-19 and bring forth the cure.
The idea came to me after creating the piece, "Magician":
I was driving in my car and the Goetia spoke to me from my past. I haven't read from this book in over three years. However, I thought there was must a Fallen Angel whos domain is viruses and disease. When I got home I ran to me book and skimmed the pages looking for a spirit who brought disease and found Marbas. Someone must have called 'The President' maliciously to evoke this global disease, I thought to myself. It is then the job of the white or grey magician to evoke this spirit and command him to undue what was done. I use terms white or grey to give a rudimentary picture of practice when in reality I am speaking of the Hermetic path.
The triangle represents Tetragrammaton, Anaphaxeton, and Primeumation which house Michael the Arch Angel that is used to bind the spirit in the summoning; also known as the Magical Triangle of Solomon. The Magician stands in a circle outside of the triangle in a circle surrounded by four candles and the Alpha and the Omega. Next, the magician renders forth the ‘Conjuration of Spirits’. For disobedient spirits the ‘General Curse’ is used to call the Spirits’ chain. In addition there is a call from Fire as well.
In this piece, the Magician is calling forth Marbas, a disobedient spirit in Chains and from Fire. - What great mysteries rare and esoteric books hold.
It was a pleasure doing this summoning via digital art, calling forth the spirit accordingly to Solomon’s key via Photoshop. I took the base for this piece from the ‘Magician’ piece and altered the scene. I brought in the triangle and shifted its perspective to give it a floating 3D effect. Next, I used clouds to create smoke with fire and chains. The lion head appearing from the smoke and fire was set using a blend mode. I moved the magician back and surrounded him by four floating candles. The magician was myself used as a model.
It goes without saying the the Goetia and Summoning magic is a scary path. In reality, the Goetia was intended to be a sort of psychological model of the days of King Solomon. The 72 spirits represented pieces of the magician's spirit, or mind. Calling forth a spirit in evocation meant calling on a part of his or her mind that was locked. It is wishful thinking that summoning a spirit can end a pandemic, but the power of magic doesn't sit with what other people believe. Rather more so, it sits with the 'Will' of the magician and how he or she sees the world. I enjoyed created this piece and thought it right to give it a place on the blog. As I created this work I could here the conjurations in my head play out as if it was a true summoning. I wanted it to be real, so real it invoked fear that this may be possible. I don't think we're afraid of the magician in this piece as he is battling to banish Marbas and undue his evil, but more so the fear stems from the possibility that just as easily someone could have called on Marbas to bring forth the pandemic. The fear we feel then is that someone could so intrinsically possess these character traits. There is no good or evil, just light and dark. Having fear from this piece also speaks volumes to your progression of personal ‘Will’ in terms of a magician’s path and workings. You can not fear what isn’t real and if you don’t see this type of working as real then you shall have no fear. However, if you should fear the possibilities put forth in this piece you should see it in yourself that you possess the idea and ‘Will Power’ necessary to conduct a summoning for you see it as real; maybe not in yourself but in someone else who has practiced this path.
